One of the elements of the business we do involves trusts but the manner in which we do it is very simple, yet informative.
Many people labor under the misconception that trusts are only for the rich. Most of this has been borne of the notion of familiarity with the term, The Rockefeller Trust.
The truth is that trusts stem from medieval days and were the tool of the common man.
In the early 1900's, when the first estate tax was passed, the super rich appropriated this tool to avoid estate taxes, thus, the Rockefeller's, DuPont's, Kennedy's etc. have had their names preface the word trust, for many decades.
Trusts can protect assets, preserve assets, transfer estates tax free to heirs or fund family foundations for hundreds of years.
Trusts are not about the amount of assets that a person has, it is about what they want done with those assets in the event of their death or disability.
If no planning is done, the state or the courts will assume that role to the detriment of their family.
Trusts allow a person to fully control assets while they are alive and have the capacity to do so.
Upon death, they still exercise control as a trust effectively becomes a person's " wishes from the grave. "
